Andres Angulo has been honored by the local LULAC chapter as
Education Advocate of the Year

 

LULAC Education Event Will Honor Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties Educators & Students The League of United Latin American Citizens is pleased to announce Santa Barbara honorees for the third annual Salute to Educators Banquet and LULAC 75th Anniversary Celebration. The gala event will be held on October 22 at the Marriott Residence Inn, River Ridge. LULAC recognizes the achievements of Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties educators, para educators, classified employees, and students each year.

Santa Barbara Award Recipients

Dr. Luis Leal, author and professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara has been selected to be the recipient of the LULAC National Far West Region Award for Educational Excellence for his scholarly contributions to the field of higher education and for an exemplary career of over fifty years, in which Dr. Leal has significantly contributed to the study and understanding of Mexico, Latin America, and Chicanos in the United States. The Award is one of only three regional awards given in the state to individuals who demonstrate a commitment to serve the community in an extraordinary manner.

Dr. Blas M. Garza, Assistant Professor & Director of Bilingual Education at California Lutheran University has been selected to be the recipient of the Outstanding Educator Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding professional experience and contributions in the field of education and for excelling in developing educational programs to improve Latino Students education and providing invaluable administrative and teaching support to districts and schools for almost half a century.

Ms. Cindy Gil, Santa Barbara City College student, has been selected to receive the Outstanding Student of the Year Award for her outstanding academic work both as a student at Santa Barbara High School and at Santa Barbara City College, the invaluable service she has provided to our Latino students and community, and for the exemplary leadership she has demonstrated throughout her life. This award is given to students who demonstrate strong academic record and outstanding service to their community.

Mr. Andres Angulo, News Director and Anchor of KPMR-TV Univision “Noticias Costa Central” (an affiliate of Univision and owned and operated by Entravision Communications Corporation) has been selected to be the recipient of the Outstanding Education Advocate Of The Year Award for his outstanding educational advocacy work in the communications field. As News Director and Anchor of KPMR-TV Univision “Noticias Costa Central” Mr. Angulo has provided an invaluable service to our Latino students and their education by informing our Spanish-speaking communities in the Central Coast of important local, state and national educational news, essential educational services and programs that are available for students, and about issues impacting our local schools and Latino students.

Mrs. Doris Desales, Clerical staff at Santa Barbara High School, has been selected to be the recipient of the Outstanding Classified Employee Of The Year Award for her invaluable contributions to our students, parents and Santa Barbara High School for the past 15 years. In particular, her caring and positive demeanor in assisting Latino students and parents who don’t speak English has been of extraordinary significance to our Latino student’s education. With her assistance, Latino students and parents have been able to interact with the school’s teachers, counselors, school staff and programs available at school.

Mr. Michael Gonzalez, Director of Compliance and Categorical Programs for the Santa Barbara School Districts, has been selected to be the recipient of the Outstanding Administrator Of The Year Award for his 33 years of outstanding service in our district and schools, commitment and dedication to improving Latino students education, encouraging parental involvement in our schools, and for his invaluable assistance to community organizations working for Latino students to have a quality education and brighter future.

Mr. Pete Relis, teacher at Santa Barbara La Cuesta Continuation High School and one of the leading Founders of Cesar Chavez Charter School, has been selected as the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award for his more than 40 years of outstanding teaching career and for his advocacy work to improve the achievement of Latino and other underrepresented students, using their languages and cultures as assets in their educational and personal development.

Mrs. Mildred Quintanilla, volunteer at Santa Barbara High School, has been selected to be the recipient of the Outstanding Educational Volunteer Of The Year Award for her outstanding15 years of volunteer service in various schools and most recently at Santa Barbara High School.

Mrs. Quintanilla, has been an extraordinary volunteer since 1989 up to the present-2004. Her positive demeanor and dedication to serve students, parents and school staff has been exemplary and her volunteer services have been a major contribution in the school’s efforts to provide a quality education to students.

Mr. Jesús Catalán, Community Liaison for the Goleta School District, has been selected to be the recipient of the Outstanding Para-Professional Of The Year Award. In his current position as a Community Liaison for the Goleta School District, he has been an important link between Latino students and parents and the Goleta schools of El Camino, Kellogg, Mt.View and Brandon Elementary.
